This is @salty-horse's work in Pr0Ger#149. I am importing it here in order to be able to release a version of the package that supports Python 3.10 and higher.
My plan is to first merge this PR with minimal changes to get CI to pass. After that, I will also add support for Python 3.11 and 3.12 before making a release.
